How It Works

Understand your club distances to make better decisions on the course

1

Enter Your Distances

For each club in your bag, enter the distances you typically hit. Enter multiple values separated by commas for more accurate averages from multiple rounds or sessions.

2

Analyze the Results

View your average, minimum, and maximum distance for each club. The visual bar chart shows how your clubs compare. Check the gaps analysis to identify overlaps or distance gaps.

3

Optimize Your Bag

Use the gaps analysis to determine if you need to adjust your club setup. Ideally, you want 12-15 yard gaps between clubs to cover every possible distance on the course.

Why Knowing Your Club Distances Matters

Accurate distance knowledge is one of the most important aspects of course management. Knowing exactly how far you hit each club allows you to select the right club for every shot, reducing errors and lowering your scores.

Club gap analysis helps you identify overlaps in your bag. If two clubs travel nearly the same distance, you may want to replace one with a club that fills a gap in your distance coverage. The ideal gap between full-swing clubs is 12-15 yards for most amateur golfers.

Track over time: Your distances will change as your swing improves. Regularly updating your club distances helps you see progress and make informed equipment decisions. Consider tracking distances from multiple rounds to get reliable averages.

Conditions matter: Keep in mind that distances vary based on weather, altitude, temperature, and lie conditions. The distances you enter should represent your typical conditions for the most useful analysis.

What Is a Club Distance Calculator?

A club distance calculator is a tool designed to help golfers track and analyze the exact distances they hit with each club in their bag. Accurate distance knowledge is crucial for selecting the right club on the course, leading to better shot execution and lower scores. By recording multiple shots, you can determine your average yardage and identify any significant overlaps or gaps between your clubs.

How Does a Club Distance Calculator Work?

Our free club distance calculator uses a straightforward mathematical approach to evaluate your yardages. You input the distances of individual shots for each club, and the calculator computes the statistics for you. Any invalid, zero, or negative numbers are automatically ignored to ensure your data remains accurate and useful.

Enter Your Club Distances

To begin, simply enter the distances for the shots you’ve tracked. You can enter multiple shot values separated by commas. For instance, if you hit three drives, you might enter them all to let the tool find the center of your performance.

Compare Average, Minimum, and Maximum Distances

Once you input your data, the calculator determines several key metrics. The Average distance is calculated as the sum of all valid shot distances divided by the total number of valid shots. The Minimum represents your shortest valid recorded shot, while the Maximum is your longest. Finally, the Range is the difference between the Maximum and Minimum distances, showing your consistency.

Analyze Your Club Gaps

The calculator compares sequential club averages to identify your distance gaps. It classifies the differences into four categories: Overlap (if clubs hit very similar distances), Small Gap, Ideal Gap, and Large Gap. This helps you figure out if you have appropriate spacing between each club in your bag.

Why Are Consistent Club Gaps Important?

Having consistent gaps ensures you have a club for every possible yardage on the course without needing to force awkward half-swings. If two clubs travel nearly the same distance, that’s an overlap—meaning one club is essentially wasted space in your bag. Conversely, a large gap means there will be yardages where you don’t have a comfortable club to hit, leading to forced swings and inconsistent results.

What Is a Good Distance Gap Between Golf Clubs?

While exact numbers vary based on player ability, swing speed, and equipment, a general benchmark for full-swing clubs is roughly 10 to 15 yards of separation. However, keep in mind that actual golf club distances vary based on strike quality, weather, course conditions, and altitude. There are no universal rules, but finding a consistent yardage gap tailored to your swing is the key to solid course management.

Club Distance Calculator Example

Let’s walk through a clear example to see how the numbers come together.

Imagine you hit three drives and three 3-Wood shots. You enter the following:

  • Driver: 250, 260, 255
  • 3-Wood: 225, 230, 220

The calculator finds your Driver Average by adding 250 + 260 + 255 (which equals 765) and dividing by 3, giving you an Average of 255 yards. Your Driver Range is 10 yards (260 – 250).

Next, it calculates the 3-Wood Average: 225 + 230 + 220 = 675, divided by 3, resulting in an Average of 225 yards.

Finally, the tool calculates the gap between these sequential clubs: 255 − 225 = 30 yards. The calculator can use these sequential averages to identify whether this gap is appropriate or if it leaves a large distance gap in your bag.
