Free Golf Handicap Calculator

A Handicap Index is a standardized measure of a golfer's potential playing ability under the World Handicap System. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against one another by adjusting their scores based on the difficulty of the course they are playing.

The calculator uses your submitted scores along with the course and slope ratings for each round to compute a Score Differential. It then averages the lowest differentials out of your most recent rounds to determine your Handicap Index, following the official WHS formulas.

Introduced in 2020, the WHS unified previous regional handicapping systems (like USGA, CONGU, and Golf Australia) into a single, global standard. This ensures that a golfer's handicap is portable and consistent, no matter where they play in the world.

Course Rating reflects the expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) on a given set of tees. Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty of those same tees for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Both are required to accurately measure your performance.

A Score Differential is calculated using the formula: (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating) x (113 / Slope Rating). It normalizes your score to account for the specific difficulty of the course and tee box you played.

You can calculate an initial Handicap Index with as few as 3 rounds. However, a fully mature handicap uses the lowest 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds.

Yes. Because you manually enter the Course Rating and Slope Rating for each round, the calculator can process rounds from any rated golf course worldwide.
