Note that the calculator requires the total score to be at least 1 stroke per active hole to function. This feature simply distributes the total evenly using basic division—it does not predict how a golfer actually played on a shot-by-shot basis.
How Is Golf Score vs Par Calculated?
The math behind scoring in golf is straightforward. The calculator determines your score vs par using three simple metrics:
- Total Score: The sum of entered scores for the active holes played.
- Total Par: The sum of the par values for those same active holes.
- Score vs Par: Calculated simply as Total Score − Total Par.
For example, if you are playing an 18-hole course where the Total Par is 72, and your Total Score is 80, your Score vs Par is +8.
What Do Birdie, Par, Bogey, and Eagle Mean?
As you play, each hole is classified based on how your score compares to the hole’s par. Here is the calculator’s exact classification methodology:
- Eagle or better: 2 or more strokes under par
- Birdie: 1 stroke under par
- Par: Exactly matching the par value
- Bogey: 1 stroke over par
- Double bogey or worse: 2 or more strokes over par
These terms are universal in golf scoring and are automatically calculated for every active hole you enter.
What Is the Difference Between Par 70, Par 71, and Par 72?
Changing the course layout directly affects your total par and score-vs-par calculations. A Standard Par 72 course typically features four Par 3s, ten Par 4s, and four Par 5s. A Par 70 course might substitute two Par 5s with Par 4s, making the course shorter but often tighter. When you select a layout, the calculator adjusts the baseline so your score vs par remains accurate.
For partial rounds, a standard 9-hole par layout is represented by the active holes in the calculator. By default, the calculator’s standard configuration produces a Par 36 for 9 holes. However, not every golf course has exactly the same 9-hole par, which is why individual hole pars can always be adjusted.

Let’s look at an accurate numerical example based on the calculator’s methodology. If you play 18 holes on a course with a Total Par of 72, and you shoot a Total Score of 84, your Score vs Par will be +12.
To see where those 12 extra strokes came from, the calculator breaks down individual hole classifications. For instance, if Hole 1 is a Par 4 and you score a 5, your score minus the hole par is +1, which is classified as a Bogey. Conversely, if Hole 2 is a Par 5 and you score a 4, the difference is -1, resulting in a Birdie.
