Course Handicap = (Handicap Index × Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

Crucially, these exact Course Handicap values remain unrounded during this intermediate step. Keeping the numbers unrounded ensures maximum precision before the team allowances are applied.

Apply the Scramble Handicap Allowances

Once the four exact Course Handicaps are calculated, they are ordered from lowest to highest. The WHS recommends the following percentage allowances for a four-player Scramble:

• Player A (Lowest Handicap): 25%
• Player B (Second Lowest): 20%
• Player C (Third Lowest): 15%
• Player D (Highest Handicap): 10%

These percentages are applied strictly to the individual exact Course Handicaps, not directly to the Handicap Indexes.

How Is the Scramble Team Playing Handicap Calculated?

To find the final Team Playing Handicap, the calculator follows a precise sequence. It takes the four individual exact Course Handicaps, multiplies them by their respective 25%, 20%, 15%, and 10% allowances, and then adds those four allowance values together. Only after this total sum is calculated does the final rounding occur.

Consider this numerical example. Suppose the four players have the following exact, unrounded Course Handicaps for the chosen tees:

• Player A Course Handicap = 10
• Player B Course Handicap = 12
• Player C Course Handicap = 20
• Player D Course Handicap = 30

The allowances are applied as follows:

• 10 × 25% = 2.5
• 12 × 20% = 2.4
• 20 × 15% = 3.0
• 30 × 10% = 3.0

The four values are added together (2.5 + 2.4 + 3.0 + 3.0) to get a total of 10.9. The final Team Playing Handicap is then rounded once at the very end, resulting in an 11.

Why Are the Course Handicaps Calculated Individually?
