A foursomes handicap calculator determines the correct playing allowance for a Foursomes competition according to the World Handicap System (WHS). Foursomes is an alternate shot format where two partners form a team and play one ball between them, alternating shots until the hole is completed.
Because each player has their own Handicap Index, finding the correct team allowance requires a specific mathematical sequence. Rather than simply averaging the two indexes together, this calculator accurately processes each player’s data independently to find their Course Handicaps, combines them, and applies the official WHS allowance.
How Does a Foursomes Handicap Calculator Work?
To accurately calculate your team’s playing allowance, the calculator requires five inputs: Player A’s Handicap Index, Player B’s Handicap Index, Course Rating, Slope Rating, and Par. These metrics ensure the difficulty of the specific golf course is appropriately factored into your team’s final number.

Calculate Player A’s Course Handicap
First, the calculator determines the exact, unrounded Course Handicap for the first player using the standard WHS formula:
Course Handicap = (Handicap Index × Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)
The calculator maintains this exact number internally, preserving its precise decimal value.
Calculate Player B’s Course Handicap
Next, Player B’s data is processed using the exact same formula. It is important to note that the calculator does not average the two Handicap Indexes together, nor does it attempt to create a combined Handicap Index. Each player receives an exact Course Handicap based entirely on their own skill level.
Apply the 50% Foursomes Allowance
Once both exact Course Handicaps have been determined, they are added together to create the Team Course Handicap. Finally, the WHS mandates a 50% allowance for the alternate shot format. The combined Course Handicap is multiplied by 50%, and the result is rounded to the nearest whole number to establish the final Playing Handicap.

Foursomes vs Four-Ball Handicap
Foursomes is strictly an alternate shot format where teammates share a single ball. Because both players contribute to every hole, their Course Handicaps are combined and halved.
In contrast, Four-Ball (often called 4BBB) is a format where each golfer plays their own ball throughout the round, and the team takes the lowest score on each hole.
