Our Mission

Our mission is to make golf handicapping accessible to everyone. Every golfer — from weekend players to competitive amateurs — deserves accurate, easy-to-use handicap tools without paying a cent. The World Handicap System unified golf handicapping across the globe in 2020, and we built this site so no golfer is left behind by complexity or cost.

Why This Site Exists

FreeGolfHandicapCalculator.com is an independent project, not a company with a sales team behind it. It exists because working out a Course Handicap for an unfamiliar course should not require a paid subscription or a spreadsheet.

When the World Handicap System replaced the old national systems, the arithmetic changed for millions of golfers at once. A lot of the calculators still online were built for the systems the WHS replaced, and many of the accurate ones sat behind a login or a paywall. This site was built to close that gap: the current formulas, free, in three languages, with no account required.

It is deliberately small and deliberately focused. We do not sell equipment, run advertising networks, or collect your scores. The site does one job.

What We Offer

• Educational guides — In-depth articles explaining how the World Handicap System works, from Slope Rating to the Playing Conditions Calculation, organised across nine topic areas.
• Multi-language support — Every calculator and guide is available in English, Spanish and French, with the same content in each.
• Privacy by design — The scores you enter are processed in your browser. They are never sent to or stored on our servers, so there is nothing for us to lose or sell.

How We Build and Check Our Tools

Every calculator on this site implements the formulas published by the USGA and The R&A as part of the World Handicap System. Where a calculation has a defined rounding rule, a cap or an adjustment — the soft cap, the hard cap, the Playing Conditions Calculation, the maximum Handicap Index of 54.0 — we implement the rule as written rather than approximating it.

Our written guides cite the Rules of Handicapping as their source. When those rules are revised, we review the calculators and the guides together, because a guide that describes a superseded rule is as much a defect as a calculator that returns the wrong number.

We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If you find an error in a calculation or in a guide, tell us which page it is on and we will fix it. Corrections are handled as described in our Editorial Policy.

What We Are Not

We are as clear about our limits as about what we do.

• We are independent. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the USGA, The R&A, or any national golf association. Where we describe their rules, we are describing them, not speaking for them.
• We do not issue handicaps. Our calculators are educational tools. They do not produce an official Handicap Index. Only an authorised golf association or an affiliated club can do that, and a number produced here carries no standing in competition.
• We are not a substitute for your association. National associations apply their own local rules on score submission, qualifying competitions and reviews. Where those differ from the general position we describe, your association is correct and we are not.
